PoE applications began with the need
for powering early-version Voice over IP Phones. Quickly the
technology was adopted for use with Wireless LAN Access Points.
With the ratification of the IEEE 802.3af PoE Standard in late
2003 came new applications for powering IP Security Cameras.
Projections indicate that many more Manufacturers plan to adapt
their End devices to accept Power over Ethernet Technology.
Everybody wins as PoE becomes ubiquitous on the Network.
Overview of PoE Applications and Solutions
Rarely in the history of Computer Networks has an Enabling Technology
been so tied to the Growth and Success of the Emerging Technologies
it supports. Without the development of Power over Ethernet
(PoE), other Technologies such as Voice over IP, Wireless LAN
and IP Security Systems would have had only fractional success.
What all these emerging technologies have in common is the need
for centralized, secure, safe low-voltage power for their End
devices without the costs associated with traditional powering
techniques. PoE has solved this problem allowing for unimagined
growth and acceptance of the "Big 3" Applications.

Power over Ethernet has reduced the costs of the total System
package for all of these Applications. It has reduced the
complexity and cost of the installation and maintenance required,
while increasing the security and reliability of the Network.
